About me:
I enjoy feeding people and when someone leaves the table happy, it is inspiration to keep on cooking. Day to day, I cook mostly for my wonderful husband Shane who inspires me to try my hand at new recipes and presentations. His recently discovered allergy to gluten has moved both of us to explore new foods.

I naturally tend toward comfort foods when I cook but I'll eat almost any food - a bold statement for a former picky eater. I love ethnic foods, especially Moroccan, Middle Eastern and Japanese (sushi). And a wood-grilled burger once in a while makes me very happy.
My occupation:
Purchaser
My easy cooking tip to members:
Get a slow cooker!
My healthy cooking tip to members:
You can add flavor without fat by using broth, juice or tea instead of water to cook rice and other grains. Use reduced sodium broth and add sea salt to taste.
My favorite healthy restaurants / eateries:
Seasons 52, Pei Wei Asian Diner, California Grill, Shari, Bosphorous, Kona Cafe
Recommended websites or cookbooks that teach cheaper, easier, healthier or special diets cooking:
Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant has inspired me for years now. I also like Gourmet magazine for recipes. Just got a cookbook called Gluten-free Baking which looks good.
My cooking skill level:
advanced

The Cost of Buying Gluten-Free

I must admit that I am taking a few minutes to gripe. My complaint? The outrageous pricing on some gluten-free products. I am not talking about foods that are naturally free of gluten like fruits, vegetables, or rice. It is easy enough for us to purchase these at the same price as ev… Continue

Unexpectedly Gluten-Free

Much can be and has been said about Wal-Mart and people either usually love or hate this ubiquitous retailer. From the gluten-free perspective, I have to give credit to them – Wal-Mart unexpectedly rocks. For months now, my husband and I have been pleased to discover that most… Continue

Is there any gluten in this Elephant?

About six months ago, when the phrase “gluten free” was still quite new to my husband Shane and I, my mom and nephew came to visit us. We wanted to go out to dinner but had some trepidation due to Shane’s gluten allergy. After deliberating a bit, we concluded there would have to be… Continue

In Search of Safe Dining

Having a food allergy of any kind makes it a challenge to dine out and it is particularly difficult when someone has a gluten allergy or celiac disease. Since gluten can be found in so many different foods, such as sauces and dry rubs, seemingly innocent foods can cause a problem due to what they're cooked with. In addition, there are cross-contamination concerns. You might order a salad with an oil-and-vinegar dressing that’s safe but if it’s tossed in a bowl that was previously inhabited by a… Continue

Fast Food, Slow Decision

My husband and I are currently involved in the very interesting process of dealing with a dietary restriction, namely his intolerance to gluten. Gluten is a protein found in many grains such as wheat, barley and rye. I will probably get into more scientific tidbits about this ubiquitous protein in the future but my purpose in starting this blog is to discuss more of the personal side of dealing with a food allergy. Because food has very profound effects on our lives – first and foremost, surviva… Continue
